Presentation of the French branch of the ILA

The International Law Association (ILA), headquartered in London, aims to progressively develop international law (in both its public and private dimensions) through the study, codification and proposal of new standards. Since its creation in 1873, the ILA/ADI has thus fulfilled a normative function by submitting to the international community draft conventions or other texts likely to advance international law. The resolutions of the ILA/ADI as well as the reports of its international committees and working groups are intended to influence the evolution of international law and to inform the institutions responsible for its development.

The ILA/ADI enjoys observer status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It brings together 63 national branches and 4,600 members, experts in international law, throughout the world.

The French Branch, which is one of the largest of the ADI/ILA, brings together more than 300 specialists in international law, academics or practitioners (representatives of governments, intergovernmental or non-governmental organizations, lawyers, judges, arbitrators, legal managers of companies, etc.). It participates through its members in the work of the ADI/ILA, in particular its international committees and working groups. In addition, it regularly organizes scientific events on current legal issues or related to the work of the ADI/ILA. In 2023, the French Branch organized the ceremonies for the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Association de droit international/International Law Association.
