Members of the association

The French Branch brings together more than 300 members, specialists in international law (private or public), academics or practitioners (lawyers, arbitrators, judges, senior officials, etc.). The association also welcomes doctoral members.

Membership in the French Branch offers the following advantages:

  • Participation in a global network of over 4,500 members, bringing together the leading specialists in international law;
  • Possibility of participating at a preferential rate in the biennial conferences of the ADI/ILA;
  • Possibility of participating in the international committees and working groups of the ADI/ILA;
  • Reserved access to the work of the ADI/ILA via the association’s website;
  • Participation in scientific events and other activities organized by the French Branch (approximately 5 events per year, most accessible by videoconference);
    Participation and voting rights at the meetings of the French Branch;
  • Subscription to the electronic mailing list of the French Branch, allowing you to receive information relating to the association, including a biannual newsletter.

Doctoral members:

  • Benefit from the above advantages. They cannot be appointed to participate in international committees or working groups, but they can be invited to assist full members who participate in them;
  • Appoint a representative to sit on the Board of Directors;
  • Are intended to become active members upon obtaining their doctorate.

    Members of the association can connect to their private online space, accessible on the ADI/ILA website. This space allows them to contact members of all other branches, to freely access the work of the ADI/ILA (in particular the reports of the biennial conferences), etc.

STATUTES

Article V – MEMBERS

The association is composed of:

– active members;

– legal entity members;

– honorary members;

– benefactor members;

– life members;

– doctoral members.

Active members are natural persons.

Legal entity members may propose up to three persons to participate in the activities of the association. They have only one vote for decisions at general meetings.

Honorary membership may be granted by the board of directors to any natural person whose activity is oriented towards international law or likely to promote its development. It does not exempt them from paying the annual subscription.

Benefactor members are persons who pay an entry fee and an annual subscription.

Life members pay a flat-rate subscription paid upon admission as a life member.

Doctoral members are natural persons enrolled in a doctorate who are preparing a thesis relating to international law. They provide proof of their registration at the request of the secretary general. Once admitted in accordance with Article VI, they benefit from a reduced subscription and participate in the activities of the association. They elect their representative to the board of directors. They may not be appointed to participate in the international committees or working groups of the International Law Association. Doctoral members may become active members without going through the admission procedure provided for in Article VI.

Article VIII – TERMINATION

Membership is lost by:

a) resignation;

b) death;

c) expulsion by the Board of Directors for failure to pay the membership fee for two consecutive years or for serious reasons. In the latter case, the person concerned is invited to present his or her observations to the Board of Directors and may appeal the decision to expel the member before the ordinary general meeting.
